Yes, you did read that right! A new study suggests that drinking alcohol and coffee may help you live longer!
The study from the University of California Irvine followed the lives of 1600 people in a vast study and found that people who “drank moderate amounts of alcohol or coffee lived longer than those who abstained.”
“I have no explanation for it, but I do firmly believe that modest drinking improves longevity,” Dr. Claudia Kawas, one of the study’s main researchers, said at the conference for the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Of course, the key word in this survey finding is, of course, moderate.
According to the research, those who drank only two glasses of wine or beer per day decreased chances of premature death by 18 per cent. Two cups of coffee per day decreased chances by 10 per cent.
The 90+ Study has examined more than 1,600 people over the age of 90 since it began in 2013. The participants agreed to regular check-ups to help researchers determine life choices and natural factors enabled people to live past 90.
Moderate drinking wasn’t the only activity reported as having a positive impact on the health of the participants.
Regular exercise and spending time practising a hobby were also associated with living for longer.
Those who spent two hours a day on a hobby were 21 per cent less likely to pass away prematurely, while 15 to 45 minutes of daily physical activity also reportedly reduced their risk of an early death by 11 per cent.
But what we're going take away from all this is official confirmation that we can have that guilt-free wine tonight and enjoy our skim latte tomorrow - all in the knowledge we'll be here for years and years to come!
