Sydney daycare centre decides to scrap Mother’s Day celebrations

An early learning centre in Sydney has made the decision to do away with Mother’s Day and Father’s Day celebrations from now on.
The Learn and Laugh early childhood centre in Drummoyne emailed parents on Tuesday to notify them of the decision – and the reason why it was made.
"We have spent a lot of time discussing and reflection on this and believe we want to be a more inclusive centre," the email reads.
"We want to include all families here at Learn and Laugh regardless of their family dynamics.
"Instead, we have decided to do family and friends day at different times throughout the year. That way anyone close to the children can come and take part."
It is believed that while the Drummoyne centre is the first Learn and Laugh facility to implement these changes, that other centres plan to follow suit next year.
Learn and Laugh have six centres in Sydney and surrounding areas, including Rosebery, Lewisham, Wyoming, Alexandria, Drummoyne and Hornsby.
While on social media some parents welcomed the change – or at least said it wouldn’t bother them, others thought it was a sign of political correctness gone wrong.
“I don’t see why anyone would care. They’re not cancelling Mother’s Day,” wrote one parent.
“I’m a single mum and whenever my kids child care had Father’s Day things on, I was invited. Sometimes I didn’t go just like not all dads could go anyway. If the kids make fathers day things they give it to me. I don’t see a problem,” added another.
