The major event happens when a full or new moon passes closer than usual to Earth in its monthly orbit, appearing up to 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than an average full moon.
Sydney folk will be able to see the rare occurrence from around 7:07pm tonight, but finding the ideal vantage point is essential - here are some of the most spectacular spots in the city to see the moon.
Any of the Eastern suburbs beaches
The moonrise will be at its most spectacular over the horizon, just as the sun sets and the sky begins to darken, so Eastern beaches like Bondi, Bronte and Coogee are ideal spots to catch this astronomical phenomenon.
Sydney Tower Eye
With incredible, 360 degree views of the city and its surrounds, Sydney Tower Eye is a no-brainer for supermoon spotting.You can nab some tickets for the Observation Deck, which takes visitors until 9pm.
Observatory Hill
Hidden in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, this cute little park with its jaw-dropping views is the ideal post-work option. Pick up a little picnic from a grocery store along the way and watch the supermoon rise behind the Sydney Harbour and Bridge.
Fairfax Lookout
Follow the easy trail from the end of North Head Scenic Drive to find this lookout offering incredible views of both Sydney's coastline and city skyscrapers.
North Curl Curl Rockpool
There are plenty of good vantage points along Sydney's Northern Beaches but North Curl Curl Rockpool is certainly one of the most picturesque, with the iconic swimming spot making a great foreground for stunning snaps.
