Nine-month-old twins in Quincy, Illionois have been making headlines all over the world, and it's not just because they're adorable.
Kalani inherited her mother Whitney Meyer’s lighter Caucasian complexion, while Jarani resembles her darker-skinned dad, African-American Tomas Dean.
“We’re chromosome twins,” 25-year-old Meyer recently wrote on Facebook, alongside a photo of her adorable girls. “Kalani is light with blue eyes and Jarani is the darker one with brown eyes.”
Kalani and Jarani are fraternal twins, meaning that they developed from two different eggs that were fertilized by their own sperm cell. But according to the BBC, the chance of a biracial couple having twins that are born with two different skin colours is approximately 1 in 500.
Speaking with US Weekly, Meyer revealed her surprise at meeting her daughters for the first time.
“I asked the doctor why Kalani’s skin was so white! I couldn’t figure out why she looked so different to her sister.”
“No one believes they’re twins,” she continued. “When we go out in public, people will start looking at them because I dress them identical and I can tell they are confused.”
“They are my miracle babies.”
