The case of a newborn baby found dead and abandoned in a New South Wales backyard is a "mystery" to police.
A Newcastle resident - living on Church Street, Stockton - found the baby after going out into their backyard on Tuesday morning.
Newcastle Police Commander Detective Superintendent Brett Greentree said the occupant has no connection to the baby but investigations continue.
"It it just really a heartbreaking situation," Greentree said.
"It's very very sad."
Greentree told reporters detectives will remain at the house for most of the day and won't rule foul play out.
The baby's mother has not yet been identified but Greentree said she gave birth "very, very recently".
Police hold grave concerns for the mother’s welfare, who they say may need urgent medical attention.
Greentree urges anyone with information about her to come forward.
"Surely somebody would have some idea and would be able to assist us," he said.
"It's a tragic set of circumstances."
The infant’s gender and age are unknown.
Investigations continue.
