A woman suffering from severe postpartum depression allegedly threw her newborn baby from a moving car in Bali, before jumping from the vehicle herself.
Nicole Stasio from the US jumped from the vehicle without warning according to a driver and tour guide who were with her, reports the Daily Mail.
Initially police were unaware of what had happened to the baby, until she was found with serious injuries on the road some kilometres away.
The newborn baby died about seven hours later at the same hospital, Bali Mandara, where Stasio is also being treated.
The 32-year-old is believed to be in a severe state of depression in hospital so police have been unable to question her.
The young woman had been living in Bali and had given birth to her daughter there in September. Her parents had been staying with her but had returned to the US. It is not known who the baby’s father is.
The woman and her baby were on the way to the airport to return to the US when Stasio allegedly had a change of heart and asked to go back to Ubud, which is when the incident occurred.
