After taking some time out of the spotlight, former Home And Away golden girl, Bonnie Sveen – and partner of three-and-a-half years, Nathan Gooley – has quietly been working away on her biggest and most exciting project to date – her pregnancy with identical twins!
When New Idea sits down with the mum-to-be, she’s understandably a bundle of nerves and excitement as she anticipates the big day.
‘I’m 30 weeks pregnant now and I’m due in about six weeks, so the first week of October. We wanted to fall pregnant in 2018, we both wanted to start a family but then it happened super quick – you can do the math!’ she laughs.
‘So unconsciously we were both manifesting these babies, and we both very ready.’
Here, in this exclusive interview, Bonnie, 29, shares her birth plan, plans for a wedding and her panic when she discovered she was having twins at 19 weeks.
Congratulations Bonnie! How are you feeling?
I don’t know if it’s the hormones that make you so happy, but most of the time it’s a pretty beautiful experience and I’m just relishing the last trimester while they’re still there. I just think whenever I’m experiencing discomfort, I’m never going to be pregnant with twins again, so just try to enjoy it. I didn’t think it would come so naturally to carry a pair of little babies.
Take us back to the moment you found out you were pregnant.
We found out we were having twins at 19 weeks, but I found out I was pregnant at seven and a half weeks. I was filming interstate. Nath and I have been back and forth a lot between New South Wales, Tassie and Queensland. I found out while I was on my own, shooting up on the Gold Coast. Nathan was the first call. We’d done all the regular home tests, and they said I wasn’t pregnant. But things weren’t quite right when I was in Queensland so I went to the doctor and sure enough, I was pregnant! I really didn’t want to tell Nath on FaceTime so that was a bit crap, but it was also just a massive flood of excitement. It was bittersweet with him not being there but at the same time – it was only a matter of time. I was on set of my first feature film ever [Escape And Evasion] so it was like, ‘Oh my god, I’m kicking goals!’
And cut to 19 weeks, you find out you’re having twins?
We’d had a number of appointments – it was all going really well. We booked in a scan in Tassie, but it didn’t quite sync up so we did it when we were back in Sydney. As the sonographer is doing the scan she says, ‘Do you know what those two circles are?’ And I thought, ‘Either something is wrong or that’s two little heads.’ And we both just went, ‘Oh my goodness!’
What was your initial reaction to the news of twins?
My absolute first reaction when she said we were having twins: I cried. I cried for a while. I was thinking, ‘How am I going to do this?’ It’s our first baby and now it’s two. The pregnancy, the risk, the birth itself – everything. We are now going to have to be doubly prepared. So once that wave left, it was just absolute bliss. I was over the moon – happy crying, laughing, while Nathan was left with an open jaw. He was speechless. But we’ve always wanted kids. We’ve both got big families between us and now we’re adding two more!
And have you found out the sex?
We don’t know what we’re having yet. We’re going to keep that a surprise for the birth.
Do you and Nathan have plans for more kids down the track?
Probably not anytime soon! Let’s look at the 5-10 year life plan and maybe somewhere in that gap, we might. But for now, two is pretty great. We’re just enjoying each day as it comes.
